My late mum's only sister, my aunt Shirley, died suddenly this morning. Her death wasn't unexpected, but it was way earlier than had been predicted.
From left to right in the photo are my mum, who died in 1996 aged just 56, my papa who died in 1959 aged just 46, my aunt Shirley who died today aged 65, and my nana who died just over two years ago aged 87.
So today the last of that family unit passed away, and the happy faces in the photo, taken at Garrion Bridge in Lanarkshire probably not very long before my papa died, are no longer with us.
Rest eternal grant unto them O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them.
Fabulous picture. The hair styles and clothes remind me of a series of photographs of my cousin's wedding in the mid 50's.
ReplyDeleteYour father looks old enough to be married to your gran. But then men always dressed and looked like their fathers. Now fathers try to look and dress like their sons.
In the picture your mum looks much older than the 5 years difference in age between her and your aunt would suggest.
Barry, apologies for my misleading terminology. My papa was my grandfather and indeed was married to my gran!
ReplyDeleteI'd guess that in the photo my mum was probably about 18 and my aunt was probably around 13 and those are probably the only ones which would exhibit such a difference in perceived ages. If that makes sense.
Family photographs like this can be so full of memories - even if you don't remember that particular occasion yourself, they can be triggers for so many other situations - even other peoples' photos can bring similar photos of your own into focus, perhaps not seen for many years.
ReplyDeleteWhat I DO know is that this happy group would have been proud to know their descendants.
